Last February, J. Crew presented its fall/winter 2012 collection at the tents at the Lincoln Center in New York. In a packed show space, models were lined up on the center with one side devoted to the men’s collection and the other side for womenswear.

The men’s collection featured upgraded wardrobe basics such as utility jackets, chinos, shawl collar cardigans, toggle coats, denim jackets and trench coats. There is a polished quality to the clothes without looking studied or affected. If you’re a man and you don’t have these items in your sartorial arsenal yet, this collection will help you build a solid wardrobe.

For the women’s there was a continuation of the printed silk pants that were all the rage last spring. ┬áThis time they were paired with knits in mohair and cashmere and cropped jackets. There’s tons of plaid and tweed and pretty cocktail dresses. The overall theme is about layering but not the pile-it-on-Olsen-twin-style. J. Crew’s version of layering is more subtle with clothes that fit impeccably.

For those in Hong Kong who want to purchase pieces from the J.Crew collection, they can now do so starting in October at Lane Crawford. The luxury retailer will stock a curated selection from J. Crew’s fall 2012 collection. The collection will be available at Lane Crawford IFC Mall in Hong Kong and at their outpost in Beijing. It will also be available at lanecrawford.com. This will be the first time that J. Crew merchandise will be available outside of their retail stores.
