Fashion Away We Go: Designers Share Their Summer Plans

With summer in our midst, why not take a look at what our favorite designers are doing this month. From adventures in the Hamptons to gastronomic trips in Europe, Rachel Zoe, Michael Bastian, Peter Som, Lela Rose and many more share how they’re going to have fun in the sun…

Peter Som: Summer for me is all about the beach, so I’ll be taking time at my place in Fire Island, as well as going to the Hamptons. There’s nothing I love more than spending time with friends, cooking great summer food and enjoying every minute of being outside.

Rebecca Minkoff: I just got back from an amazing vacation with my family on Harbour Island in the Bahamas. I had never been before and thought it was just the most adorable charming place! For the rest of the summer I plan to go out east with my husband and son. I just opened a pop up shop in the Sole East Resort and can’t wait to visit it!

Michael Bastian: Since I have been presenting my new spring 2013 collection in Milan, I have not yet planned my summer vacation. However, I am dying to go back to the Canary Islands to Maspalomas, in the island of Gran Canaria specifically. I love it there—my favorite hotel is Grand Hotel Residencia. I spent four days there last summer. The food, the staff, the rooms and the pool are all amazing. I can’t wait to go back.

Lela Rose: My family and I are headed to Copenhagen and Stockholm to go on a little food tourism jaunt, eating at three of the top 50 restaurants in the world. We are eating at NOMA (#1) and Geranium (#49) in Copenhagen as well as biking all around the city. Copenhagen is the absolute best biking city, as it is incredibly accessible. I am dying to see how it all works. We are then heading to Stockholm for a few days and are eating our final blowout meal at Mathias Dahlgren (#41).  After all that travel, we will head out to Jackson Hole, Wyoming where we spend many of our summers mountain biking, hiking, tubing, and just enjoying the mountain air.

Rachel Zoe: My dream for the summer is to sit on the beach between Malibu and the Hamptons with my son and husband…That’s pure heaven! (See more of Rachel Zoe’s summer plans at Trippy)

Fiona Kotur: My family and I will travel from Hong Kong to pastoral Litchfield County in Connecticut. I love the live music in our small town. From student performances, and the visiting Tokyo String Quartet at the Yale Summer School of Music to the Chamber Music Festival at the Norfolk Shed to bands like Gin Blossoms and Soul Asylum that play in Infinity Hall, a small venue in the middle of town. Tanglewood is also nearby, so hoping to catch James Taylor and Yo-Yo Ma performing there as well. Looking forward to a music-filled summer away with my family.

Yeardley Smith of Marchez Vous:  Learn swing dancing, consider sky-diving, holiday on an island with pink sand and a palm tree, take every other Wednesday off, skinny dip as often as possible, gleefully tend my garden: The Simpsons and Marchez Vous and laugh ‘til my guts hurt!

Bibhu Mohapatra: I am designing the costumes for Aida at the Glimmerglass Opera in Cooperstown.  I will spend most of the month of June up there as the costumes are being made. Cooperstown is in a very beautiful part of New York with rolling hills and farmlands. The Opera opens on July 7th. After that, I plan to take a week trip to visit my friends on Lopud, an island in Croatia.

Deborah Sawaf of Thale Blanc: Every year we spend 8 weeks in the South of France, where the family has been meeting for over 35 years to celebrate family above all, life, new babies, engagements, weddings, beautiful weather, friends, really any excuse to party. We do many small trips around Europe —from Cote d’Azur to Monte Carlo to Florence— driving mostly, with at least one special culture trip for our three kids.

Rafe Totengco: Several years ago I read A Year In Provence and ever since then I’ve always wanted to see, taste and experience what inspired Peter Mayle. My boyfriend and I were invited by friends to spend a long weekend in their home near Montpellier. It was on offer we couldn’t refuse. We’re going to stay a little longer and discover the surrounding little towns.

It all sounds wonderful. I spend half the year in our apartment in Manhattan and the other half in our house in Brittany. It’s always a vacation wherever we are. Working in our garden and pond, as well as communing with my fish “son”, Alfie.a giant koi,is a great pleasure. He’s the only fish I know that loves to be cuddled like a dog! This has to be seen to be believed!
