Fashion Yayoi Kusama Invades New York For Louis Vuitton Collab And Whitney Museum Exhibit

Yayoi Kusama WIndow At The Louis Vuitton Store On Fifth Avenue

The Louis Vuitton store on Fifth Avenue in New York City has been transformed into one giant canvas of Yayoi Kusama‘s polka dots to celebrate the Japanese artist’s collaboration with the French luxury goods company. Black polka dots in varying sizes cover the store’s facade, snaking all the way to the top of the building that houses the store. The windows have been dressed in an homage to Kusama’s oeuvre. One features a sea of tentacles in the artist’s signature dots (pictured above). In another, dolls in the artist’s likeness in red dresses with white polka dots are suspended on air against a white background littered with red dots. Inside the store, a special section is devoted to the collection featuring classic Louis Vuitton bags and shoes washed in Kusama’s dots.

This is not the first time that Louis Vuitton has collaborated with an artist for a special collection of ready-to-wear and accessories. It previously worked with Stephen Sprouse (graffiti collection), Takashi Murakami (multi-color monogram) and Richard Prince (nurses). All of them were commercial successes as will this new partnership.

Kusama also traveled to New York for the opening of the retrospective exhibit of her work at the Whitney Museum. New York is the last stop of the traveling exhibit. It was previously shown in Madrid, Paris and London. It features 60 years of her work and will be on display until September 30.
